Take down the tattered Union Jack

Council bosses have vowed to replace a tattered Union Flag flying at Lincoln Castle - after a campaign launched by patriotic Echo readers.

In a dramatic U-turn, tourism chiefs at Lincolnshire County Council say a new flag is now “on order” and should be ready in time for the Easter weekend.

And they have even promised to find a replacement flag in the meantime, from another county heritage site.

The debate was initially kicked off on the Echo website by bemused reader Richard Paulson, of Sewell Road, off Greetwell Road, Lincoln.

He said the condition of the untidy Union Flag brought shame on the entire county.

The council told the Echo that high winds and a bad winter had damaged the national emblem, which is usually replaced once or twice a year.

Spokesman Jeremy Webster said: “We have already ordered a new flag for the castle and will be replacing the old one as soon as the new one arrives.”

Concerned reader Gerry Raffell, from Welton, near Lincoln asks: “What would it cost to take the Union Flag down in adverse weather to preserve it’s condition?

“The castle and cathedral are Lincoln’s top tourist attractions bringing people from all over the world.”

Trouble in Barrow in Furness

DEFIANT businessman Roger McKimm has lost a battle to keep St George flags on an historic Furness landmark.

Barrow Borough Council had ordered Mr McKimm to remove the red and white emblems adorning windows of the grade-II listed House of Lords on Abbey Road.

But Mr McKimm refused to comply with the demands of the council’s enforcement notice and appealed to a government-appointed inspector to rip it up.

Now the inspector, John Waldron, has considered the case and come out in support of the council.

He has upheld the enforcement notice and agreed the controversial decor should go.

Mr Waldron said: “The painted flags, with their bright colours, dominate the relevant elevations of the building and have an overbearing impact on the appearance of the building.

“They obscure important architectural features and overwhelm the fine architectural quality of the main elevations.

“They result in the listed building being out of keeping with the other prominent listed buildings fronting Abbey Road nearby, in particular the library and museum building, Ramsden Hall and the Nan Tait Centre. They harm the

character and appearance of the conservation area.”

The ruling was welcomed by the borough council.

Its regeneration director, Phil Huck, said: “This is a pleasing decision on a very high profile site in the town centre conservation area. The notice allows a month for the emblems to be removed, which expires today. If there is no compliance with this period we will be in contact with our legal advisers in order to arrange for a prosecution in the magistrates’ court.

If there is continued reluctance from the owner to conform, we may have to resort to direct action, followed by recovery of our costs.”

The Evening Mail was unable to contact Mr McKimm.

Man shot at with BB gun after flying the Swastika

Well I guess this could have been predicted, and no you cant buy Nazi flags here!

 From Florida

LEHIGH ACRES, Fla.- At first glance, you don’t notice the damage. Look closer, you see the tiny bullet holes and shattered glass of Anthonie Barrett’s SUV.

He says he was smoking a cigarette late Wednesday night outside of his Michigan Road home, when he noticed a slow moving car.

“I began hearing discharge of a pellet gun, air rifle or air gun..something like that and impacts hitting my vehicle,” said Barrett who says he then immediately grabbed his cell phone to call the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

“Within minutes of being on the phone with a dispatcher, they did a second time…came by and began discharging the pellet gun, air rifle, again and impacting the car multiple times, the house multiple times and hitting me in the shoulder, doing pretty much no damage to myself,” said Barrett.

He says he’s not sure if the suspects saw him, but he thinks he knows why his house was targeted…the Nazi flag he sometimes flies in his front yard.

He claims the flag does not represent his beliefs. “I think they were the best dressed army in history, but no I do not practice the Aryan beliefs, the Nazi practices,” said Barrett.

So, what’s the deal with the flag? Barrett told WINK News he flies it, “Because I can. First amendment freedom. I love to push the issues.”

The Lehigh man is a self proclaimed flag buff and the Nazi flag is just one of at least one hundred he claims to own.

He’s been flying the flag and others for years. While most of his neighbors tell us they’re not offended by Barrett’s flags, one neighbor said, “I told him he needs to grow up, mature. There are other things in life besides creating controversy.”
